All British Field Meet: Portland, OR, August 30 & 31

It is not too soon to be thinking about this event which happens over the Labor Day weekend. We lost our Ford class a few years ago due to a low number of early registrations. I plan to attend this year (personally I am on a every-other-year schedule between this event and ECAIP).

Besides pre-registering, I plan to do the following two things:

Find out what is required to reinstate the Ford class and work through EnFoStuff and EFONA to meet the necessary number of pre-registrations.

Set up an EFONA/EnFoStuff booth at the Sunday swap meet. Members can bring small amounts of stuff to sell or trade and/or hang out.

Just a reminder that this event is next weekend. Is anybody coming?

I am hoping to have the brakes back on the Cortina on Friday. I'm also hoping it dosen't rain (too much- its been a wet summer). My plan is to drive down early Saturday morning and camp Saterday night. I plan to have a EFONA/EnFoStuff both at the swap meet on Sunday morning (but will have to leave early afternoon). Anybody is welcome to bring stuff to sell or trade in the both.

Michael,

I wont be attending at all this year (no Mini either) due to a pending surgery at Children's Seattle for our 12 year old daughter. They found a benign tumor near her lower spine and removed it in hopes that would take care of it but now they found a small fracture where it was removed. The tough thing is it's near her S1 & S2 nerve root and they've never done this procedure before. We know it's going to be fine, she's in good hands! She's a tough kid!

Wow Steve, as a fellow dad I will be hoping for the best! I'm glad that Children's is there for kids -- lucky for us that it is so close.

Portland ABFM 2008 Report

To be honest, from an English Ford perspective, this event is not as much fun as it once was – but that can be changed. To recap, ten years ago it wasn’t uncommon to have up to a dozen EnFos on display (mostly Cortinas), but then participation lagged and we lost our English Ford class and were mixed in with other assorted “Unique Marques.”

This year there were five EnFos on the field, in three different classes. In the UM 1960s class we had my Zodiac, Cliff Jone’s Mk II Cortina wagon and Steve Corey’s Mk I Cortina GT 4-door. In the UM 1970s class was Ric Cavellaro and his Mk I Escort RS 2000 (which did win second place in this category – first place was taken by a 1975 Bedford 4x4 army truck). Over in the Lotus class was a beautiful Lotus Cortina owned by Roger Neale of Seattle. The car had just been put back on the road after years storage and/or restoration work. It was a real treat to see a new EnFo that I had not previously been aware of, especially one this nice.

For Sunday’s swap meet I set up a little EFONA/EnFoStuff.com booth and talked to a few people who owned English Fords in various stages of “projectdom”. But on balance the Sunday club booth experience has been kind of lonely and I doubt that it will be repeated.

For those that don’t know, the ABFM has been combined with a three day SOVREN vintage race, which saw three Cortinas and an Escort mixing it up on the track. The special racing class this year was Formula Ford (1600 crossflow) which was fun to see.

I won’t be able to attended the Portland ABFM next year, but I have a plan to bring back the joy for 2010.

1. In March of 2010 I will try to recruit five EnFo owners who will commit to bringing their cars that year. If I communicate that information to the event organizers by April, my understanding is that we will be given an EnFo class – which means that we will all be together again (and we won’t be diluted by scattered army trucks, Bond Robins, or whatever).

2. I am going to ask the event organizers if we can set up a club booth in our section on Saturday. EFONA may have to pay for an exhibit space, but I think it would be a legitimate expense. I think that a booth, with some display items and maybe some light refreshments would be a shot in the arm to the “funometer,” and hopefully reverse the downward spiral of recent years. This plan could be put in to effect for 2009 if someone else wants to take it on.

EFONA members may recall that I had big plans to get a Ford category set up at the Portland ABFM for 2010. Well I'm pretty annoyed with the Portland ABFM folks m right now. They had told me that an English Ford class could be set up if we could more-or-less guarantee that we would have at least five cars in early registration (which isn’t that hard to do), I just needed to contact them in April to set it up -- well I tried in April and May to reach someone in the organization but couldn't come up with a phone number and all the e-mail links I had for them were either dead or went unanswered. To top it all off, when the ABFM registration package arrived in the mail, there was a printing mistake and only the Jaguar classes were listed. I interpreted this as a sign that I should spend Labor Day weekend with my family. So I won't be attending this year. If anybody else wants to make the effort to create the class next year, I would support that as best as I can.

Sorry to miss those that will show up.

Cheers,

Michael
