But the thing that concerns me is this statement:

Only surface rust except the right hand inner fender has beef eaten away by the battery tray.

Why didn't they post pictures of the problem area? How bad is it?

And a photo or two (or more) of the engine bay wouldn't hurt.

It would be nice to actually see the corrosion, I bet it is just battery acid damage?? If the corrosion doesn't go into the frame rail it would be easy to fix that up, when I did my own 105e Twin Cam conversion years ago I seem to recall removing the battery tray altogether.

I haven't seen the car but know the new owner. He came over for parts. It was purchased in Sacramento. He got it running just last week after 30 years of sitting.
After doing some work on it, radiator, gas tank, new weber carb kit, starter, brakes and hydraulic system, he was contemplating whether to place the battery in the trunk or buy a new battery tray and inner fender from the U.K.
( battery acid went thru the metal inner fender ). I recommended to cut out the battery tray and damaged inner fender ( weld in new piece ) and battery to boot.
I was told all parts are there, floors are good, interior needs re-doing.

You are right, the battery belongs in the boot anyway, it helps balance out the little 105e.
