All,
Looking for a new project. Would prefer a MK1 cortina but am realistic enough to realize the likelyhood of finding one is approaching zero. I have a line on a 1960 Anglia. What should I look out for as far as the body goes. Are there other sources of body panels besides 105speed.

The intent is not a restoration but a tasteful update. Zetec most likely but will not ignore Xflows. Also the standard gearbox, what is is it? How much will it stand for HP input. I'm also thinking in terms that a Bullet box would also be nearly impossibe to come by. How about a low end T5 as a replacement.

Hi,

Sadly the body like all cars of its era is prone to rust. So starting from the front and working back:

Fenders: Rust above headlamps and down rear edge near 'A' post. 'A' post will also suffer badly, doors will drop if seriously rusty.

Hood will rust along front edge.

Front panel will rust in corners near body joint and seams.

Doors rust along the bottom edge plus there is a rust spot in the middle of the door skin due to Ford putting a fibre pad inside which gathers moisture.

Inner and outer rocker panels rust away along with jacking points.

Bottom of rear quarters may also rust.

Trunk lid rusts along bottom edge and it may spread all around the outer skin.

Under the hood check the strut tops and inner fenders for more rust. You should also check the condition of the strut tops from under the car. It is a structural stress point.

Floor pans will rust especially if the windshield has been leaking.

Rear spring hangers and chassis members also rot away as does the rear crossmember.

I hope this helps! There are some excellent fibre glass panel available from a guy in the UK who has raced Lotus Cortinas and Anglias in vintage racing racing for some years. I don't think he has a website but I can find his email address if you wish. Express Panels also do some repro panels but they are not cheap as are NOS panels.

The gearbox should be a four speed but the orginal 997cc one does not have synchromesh on first gear. They are quite tough, I ran one behind a 1500GT motor for four years and it never complained. Rear axes are pretty tough too and the diffs are inter-changeable with many other small Fords. Standard ratio on a saloon is 4.125:1 with a 4:4 optional.

I hope all this is of use to you, feel free to ask if you want to know more. Oh, I think there is a kit available to fit the Zetec engine. Don't know about T5 boxes though!

Just try not to buy one that looks like this!

This is our newest project.. Car was one family owned all it's life, but put out to pasture in the back yard and forgotten.. Thier kids were fighting over it for years, but none ever really went back there to look at it. We were told that it was in great shape ' drive it away!'...

The dad is a friend of my brothers, and finally had enough with his kids and offered it to us..

The only good things about the car are that it has a clean title and was free...

This will be the most expensive free car we ever got!

Can you say V8 full frame and tubs?

We dont supply panels.

In the UK you can get panels from Expressed Steel Panels (www.steelpanels.co.uk)

If you only require things like sills & jacking points then you can get those from Expressed or from Classic Car Sills.

The owners club also supply parts but their insurers do not allow them to supply to the US so that could be a bit of a non starter unless you have relations here in the UK who could join the club and then order up parts on your behalf and send them to you independantly of the club.
