Thinking of replacing the starter on my 1970 GT. Does anyone have any experience with the high torque models? Best place to get them and whether they are worth the extra cost. Tried a few for fit that were ‘supposed’ to be correct but no luck. Thanks

Check with lotuselan.net, they have discussed it a lot.

I did one on a Twincam many years ago, Japanese with an adapter (fabricated) plate and it was like night and day.

I have always found the Lucas starter to be a little problematic but easy to fix. I wanted some reliability for my crossflowed Anglia so I did put on one of those Japanese hi torque starters, I was a bit too lazy and in a spendy mood so I just phoned Ken at Dave Bean for their opinion. You would have to talk to them regarding your tooth counts and compatibility but I am happy with the package I received. I ended up buying an 8.5 inch clutch, an alloy flywheel and starter combo so I knew they would work together. The bonus is that the starter and flywheel are both about half the weight of the original units but my wallet was lighter too, here are some part numbers, prices and pics comparing the starter motors. That was 2017.

Thanks Brett, I have a starter very similar to the high torque one you show there but can’t get it to fit on any of the adjustments available with the plate. I’ve got a guy looking at my original Lucas to see if it can be rebuilt, as I mentioned, I’m scared to get one online incase it doesn’t fit.
I’ll take a look at the Lotus site too.

Mountune USA have starters from WOSP Performance just for the Kent Motors.
