Thanks Bob. Good analysis of how volume is needed to pay for research and tooling. Still seems odd that rack and pinion was common from the early 50s in sports car but so many sedans kept the steering box and associated linkage. I bet is was a result of engines being moved further forward to enlarge...

Mark 1 Cortina Steerng vs Mustang
Having just fully reconditioned the steering in my Mark 1 Cortina I'm now aware of just how similar it is to a 1965 Mustang.... http://www.enfostuff.com/forum/userpix/682_IMG_99621_1.jpg But for the shape of the cross member this photo could be a Cortina. So many joints in this design. A Rack and Pi...

Carpet or Rubber Floor Covering
Looking or direction on where to source carpet or rubber floor covering for a Cortina Mark 1 4 Door.
I would actually be very happy with a rubber or vinyl floor like this....
OEM type carpet would be OK too.
Any suggestions?

Rear Axle Seals
Burton Power says their Cortina Mark 1 rear axle seals can be installed without a seal.
Seems to me that the use of the original leather type seal or a suitable rubber lip seal would be best.
Does anyone have experience with the Burton Power bearings without a separate seal?

The Estate has the 8 inch single piston rear drums with bell crank for the parking brake. It's all in rather nasty condition and waiting to be upgraded to Lotus Cortina spec. http://www.enfostuff.com/forum/userpix/682_8_Inch_Rear_Brakes_7.jpg Unfortunately I did not save any Lotus Cortina rear brake...

A brief history if my Mark 1 Estate is reported in the Member Introductions section of this forum. This is a Mark 1 Estate to Lotus Cortina spec conversion that began in the late 1970's and then went dormant for more than 30 years. I'd parted out 2 very rusty Lotus Cortinas saving one set of compone...

1965 Mark 1 Estate Returns after 32 Years.
Here I will continue to present the reactivation of the 1965 Mark 1 Estate that I gave away in 1985 and recovered in 2017 with less than 1,000 miles added to the clock.
Hopefully there will eventually be one more Mark 1 Lotus Cortina Estate on the highway.

Here's a photo of my recently re-acquired Mark 1 Estate shorty before it went away for all those years. A cold Chicago area morning in October 1980. The day my bride and I departed to drive my father's Lotus Elite from Illinois to his new retirement home in North Carolina. My Dad is gone now 12 year...
