As Brett says, do it hot with the throttles fully open. Actual peak figures are less important than equality across the lot: the lowest should be within 90% of the highest reading. Then put a small amount of oil down each cylinder and repeat. If the figures rise significantly, it suggests that compr...

The important thing isn't the size of the battery but the resistance of the cable to the starter, which increases in proportion to length, and decreases with the square of its diameter. In English, you need a good, thick cable.

Might not be the pump; could be a blockage in the line or in the tank. Try blowing back into the tank; if the pump picks up after that I 'd remove and thoroughly clean out the tank.

You'll probably need a smaller belt, and best using the bracket for an alternator rather than the one for a dynamo. How do you plan to wire it?

It should actually be stamped into the rim of the crownwheel, e.g. 8 : 33 = 4.125.

Not easy as the pistons are not visible through the plug holes. The 10hp engines' timing was determined by a pin screwed into the timing cover. This was unscrewed and turned around then pushed into the hole and pressed inwards and the engine slowly turned by hand. When the pin moved inwards as it en...

Put some oil (3-4 squirts from an oil can)through the spark plug holes into the low cylinders If the compression comes up it's probably rings, if it doesn't change then leaky valve or head gasket. Check valve clearances..if no clearance then maybe valve not seating. Dave. That's the way to check. R...

Peteleo I have to disagree with you on coil reversal. When I replaced the original engine in my '48 Prefect with one from a '58, I upgraded all the electricals to 12v and switched to negative ground. The 12v coil was labeled sw/cb and I just switched the wires. This was in 1965 and we put 30,000 mi...

Physically turn the battery around and reconnect the leads. Depending on circumstances, you might need new leads. If it has posts rather than lugs, the positive post is a larger diameter than the negative post, and the leads might be too short in the new position. Reconnect the low tension leads on ...
