I attended the 2007 Coronado Speed Festival with hopes of seeing, first hand, the ex-factory race Ford Capri RS3100, that was scheduled to run in the event. Alas, I spoke with the gentleman who was the driver and he told me that it was sold two weeks, earlier. Rumor has it going back to the UK.

But, all was not lost as I espied this little beaut:

Mr. Castaing was kind enough to pose with the Escy after his run on the track.

The mechanic didn't see the sense in my asking him to stand by the car. But, the way I see it, mechanics are the unsung heroes. Besides, they have to "stand by the car" anyway.

From what I learned, it's a 1970 Ford Escort with a 2.0L BDA motor. It has an Atlas rear end, 4-wheel disc brakes, 15X8 wheels. The axle maintains it's position with the help of a 4-link and Watt's Linkage. Since, the car was originally prepped for rallying in Portugal, there have been some teething pains in getting it sorted out for road racing. The heavier than necessary wheels, Compomotive ML, were causing the suspension to work overtime on the concrete tarmac/race course. But, even in it's current state, it moved up a couple of 3-4 places during the 12 lap event.

The Escort is kept and prepped in Petaluma, CA.

Shawn,

I got your link working now.

Sorry to hear you traveled so far to see the one car that wasn't there!

The blue car in the background -- is it a Datsun 510 or a Nissan 1800 SSS?

The trip wasn't so far...just 10 minutes from my door step :D

I'll have to look at my other photos at home, but if I recall it's an Alfa Romeo (the number doesn't jive with the participant list on the event's website). There was a line of 4 or 5 Alfa Romeos next to the Escy in this part of the paddock. So, I'm pretty certain it was another Alfa, a GT Junior, perhaps.
