I have to go back to when I was about 11 years old. My Dad owned the local small town Ford dealer. He had just taken a 2 yr old Mk2 Cortina in on trade in which he would drive for a few days as he did with most of the second hand stuff. The following day my Mom needed a car to go to the city so she loaded my two very young sisters in the back seat and set out on the highway. About 20 miles down the highway she heard this scratching sound down to her left, she looked down to see the biggest rat she had ever seen looking up at her. She almost jumped out of her skin, pulled over to the side of the road and got the kids out, left the doors open for 10 minutes or so and no rat came out. She looked inside and no rat to be found. She loaded the kids back in and promply returned home and took another car. My Dad told me and my older brother to drive the car around through the fields to see if the "rat" would come out (we lived on an acreage) I think my brother looked inside and doubted the rat story and wanted an excuse to drive the car. My job according to my brother was to kill the rat with a big stick when it came out...little did he know i would have died if that thing came out. Anyway nothing happened and we told them there wasnt any rat in the car. The next day I went out to check on the car and found a pile of carpet all chewed up below the pedals. Upon closer inspection I found the thing chewed the carpets and chewed it's way thorough the foam seal around the steering tube and found it's way out of the car on it's own. It was mystery as to where the thing was hiding but now knowing what I know about Cortinas is that the thing was crawling up in the gap between the floor and the back seat cushion.
