Cortina 2000 back to 1600?

Post by angliagt »

I'd like to know how hard it is to do.I've had a few
problems with the 2 litre, having had the rear main seal leak,
& not knowing if I did any damage to the engine getting it home.
I have a 1600 engine,with 41,000 miles on it,almost
ready to go,so I'm thinking maybe it'd be the best thing to do.

Are you talking about the converted Mk2 wagon? If so, you have to see how the original conversion was done. Was the 2 litre connected to a Cortina trans with its hydraulic clutch or was it dropped in with a pinto type trans with a cable clutch?

I don't know my gearboxes well but I would have assumed a Pinto and Cortina 2 litre might have used the same box??? My experience is limited with this conversion, I did a conversion many years ago by putting a 2 litre onto a Cortina 3 rail box in a 105e and that involved a little bit of parts mixing. I more recently broke a Pinto 1600 for its bits and from what I can see I assume again that the 1600 could replace a 2 litre as a direct bolt in on the bell housing if you are keeping the present gearbox. You might have to use a Pinto 1600 flywheel and starter motor? I recall when I took the Pinto apart that my flywheel and starter where different to a Mk2 Cortina, also the 2 litre block is about a quarter inch wider at the engine mount lug than an older 1600 but the same as a 711m so you can use the same mounts.
I am curious, is your 2 litre in your Cortina from a Pinto (front bowel sump) or a mk3 Cortina (rear bowl sump)?
How bad is your 2 litre that you want to replace it? It might be easier to just fix it if you are pulling it out anyway?
