124E front struts

Post by Dave C »

As a new Anglia owner, I have discovered that the front strut oil can be topped up.
Is this done with the car on it's wheels or with the weight off the wheels?

What oil is used , hydraulic or????

Cheers,
Dave.

Check first that oil isn't leaking past the seals.

Topping is done with the car on the ground which isn't easy with the tire in the way. I've put support blocks under the ball joints and removed the wheels. Use 20W motorcycle fork oil ( don't use jack oil as it doesn't have anti-foaming agents ) by using an oiler with a fine spout that fits in the hole.

The inserts can be rebuilt if the parts are still in good shape. Just replace the "O" ring and fill with fork oil.
Sealed inserts are still available.

Also, don't overfill it,or use a heavy weight oil,
as you could easily blow the seals out.
