These photos were taken by Judy Berrian on May 19th, 2007 at the Vancouver BC, ABFM in the lovely Van Dusen Botanical Gardens. Also on display was Cliff Jones’ 1969 Cortina station wagon.

ABFM VANCOUVER 2009

Words and photos by Les Foster

It was a record year for the Vancouver All British Field Meet held at the Vandusen Botanical Garden. Six hundred and thirty-seven British vehicles were on display!

Seven of these were British Fords which had their own class again this year. The exception was Les Foster’s 1951 E83W steel-boxed pickup which was sent off to the “Commercials”. The Thames took 2nd in that class.

Besides Les’ truck there were six Ford cars representing three eras of Ford development. Al Simmons debuted his excellent restoration of a dark blue 1950 Prefect. Al’s car won a 2nd in Class award. Elliot Sclater brought his lovely green ’50 Prefect. Bill Grant brought his incredibly original and well-preserved 1953 Zephyr Mk. I which took a 3rd in Class award in the peer voting. The technological advancement between the “upright” era and the Zephyr was amazing. The very successful Cortinas had three examples shown. Cliff Jones entered his impeccable 1969 Cortina Mk. II Estate. Lyle Foster debuted his finished restoration of his ’69 Cortina. Mark Collet showed his crowd-pleasing 1963 Cortina with its BDA racing engine. This garnered a 1st in Class. All the cars were deserving of award and really set a high standard for the show.

Put together with excellent weather, the record turnout of a wide spectrum of British cars, trucks and motorcycles, a swap meet and the beautiful garden setting it made for a memorable day.

We had a great turn out of English Fords for our special year as an “Honored Marque.” We had 13 Ford in the English Ford section, plus a E83W Thames Van in the Commercial category, four EnFos in the Racing car category (Two Mk I Escorts, a Mk II Cortina and a 105E Anglia) as well as one early Anglia in the modified (read hot rod) section. By my count a total of 19 vehicles.
In the English Ford area we had four Mk II Cortinas, three Mk II Zephyrs and Zodiacs, a Mk I Cortina, a Mk III Capri, a 100E Anglia a upright Prefect, an upright Anglia (both of these cars were new to me) and Les Foster’s E83W Thames pickup. We also and an EFONA club tent which was fun, I met some people that I would not otherwise have met there.

People’s Choice prize winners were:
1. Allan Simmon’s 1951 Prefect (restored)
2. Jerome Colman’s 1958 Anglia (restored)
3. Les Fosters 1951 Thames pickup

Over in the racing category Mark Collet (Escort) and Nick Woodham (105E Anglia) won popular prizes and John McCoy won a special award for his Escort.
