African Ford Photos 1961

Personal memories from the time when these cars were new (or at least not as old as they are now).

African Ford Photos 1961

Post by IFHP »

A bit further afield than is normal for this forum, but here are some photos that EFONA member Bob Oloman took in Rhodesia and South Africa when he was posted there on assignment by Ford of Canada in 1961.

More photos and information about his assignment establishing a Ford plant in Salisbury, Rhodesia can be found here:

Incredible images!
I found this "rare" Taunus assembled in South Africa. The P7A and P7B were available there.
The engines were the Essex 2.0 V4 (17M), and Essex 2.5/3.0 V6 (20M).
The differences are of course the RHD and the little lights under the fog lights.-
By the way, if somebody have more info about this very rare Taunus, please let me it know.
Somebody told me that this Taunus were exported to UK like Ford Hummer... I dont know if it is true.

A wonderful P7A...
German car, British engine.
Look the little red lights under the taillights. Other Fords like Escorts and Cortinas have them too...

Hi Ale,

I live in the Uk and can confirm that the Taunus was available here through the 1950s until 1970 when the Mk3 Cortina was introduced. They were RHD but with the German engines not British Ford engines. The Taunus was always very rare here but there were a number of road test reports by British motor magazines. I have not seen a RHD Taunus for many years now, I think most have been scrapped sadly. I do have models of various Taunus's though! Even the famous British Dinky Toys made a model of a Taunus which I have in my collection.

105epaul! Thanks for the answer.
Yes, I had seen some German Taunus in UK (By net of course)
They have some little differences with South African units...
I have 4 Taunus... 2 Argentinian and 2 German units.
You can find a lot of data about Argentinian and international versions here... www.clubtaunus.com.ar
Kind regards.
By the way. Have you some pics of Taunus in UK? Thanks a lot.

You're welcome. If I find any pictures of the Taunus in Great Britain I will try and post them on the forum. I know the cars were distributed by the same part of Ford that imported Australian and US Fords to Britain. I did have an RHD 1966 Galaxie 500 sedan about 15 years ago. If I find any advertisements in British magazines or road tests I would be happy to copy them and send them to you in Argentina.

Gary,

From this angle is the difference between the Austin and the Morris in the taillighhts?

Alejandro and Paul, the discussion of German Fords in the UK is drifting pretty far from the original thread, so I have started a new thread on this in the General section.

Tsk tsk Gary, it is a Cambridge, Michael was correct. And yes Michael, the main difference is the tail lights. It is an A55 Mk2, commonly known as the Fintail for obvious reasons. I remember my class teacher at primary school having a grey one.

In Argentina the Austin Cambridge was made like Siam Di Tella 1500.
It is a very remembered car here.
We enjoyed too the Morris Magnette, and Riley, but in very few units.
Was made too the Siam Di Tella in station wagon and pickup version called "Argenta"!!!! :D Beautiful car.
The Taunus P2 here is known like "The Taunus with Siam shapes" hahahaa.

I do like that black Zodiac, pretty rare to see a Zodiac in a single colour. I bet he regrets selling it!
