1951 Prefect engine 'upgrade'

Post by sideways at speed »

I'm looking at 'improving' the drivetrain in my Prefect - I want to stay 4 cyl and Ford so it will probably be a pre-crossflow GT or similar or even a Fiesta motor - though I am open to suggestions as long as it is a 4cyl ford drivetrain.

And yes, I will be looking for suggestions on brakes, steering and suspension upgrades to accompany this engine swap.

Id go with a 2.0 Zetec with bike throttle boddies and a 6 speed Miata transmission (I know you said Ford, but I think Ford and Mazda shared a factory around that time)

Try and get 4 wheel disc brakes with a Mk3 Cortina (Mustang II) front axle and a Ford 8.8inch rear axle Found in most Explorers

That'll keep me busy for a few weekends then!

I may opt for carb(s) though as I don't know if I want to add complexity - lets face it, if I insert even a humble pre-xflow Mk1 drivetrain it will still produce 3-5 time the hp I am seeing now!

Who am I kidding - more horses while keeping it driveable is the only way to go!
