G'day From WA - Made IN UK - Consul Capri nut

Post by Capri335 »

Hi Everyone. My name is John, I have been into British Fords since I could drive. The first car I ever drove, was a Ford Anglia 105E. I took my test in a Mk1 Escort, I then bought my first real car....a Consul Capri. I was supposed to do up my own Anglia, but my father refused to help me, after blowing his engine..... (he told me they liked to rev!!).

I have had a "Love Affair" with the Consul Capri ever since. I was once a President of the UK Consul Capri Club, but there was a lot of in-fighting, mainly because two guys that started the clubs, (Consul Capri Club, and Classic 315 Owners club) lived near each other, in Essex and didn't see eye-to-eye.

Eventually the two clubs did merge, this was after I emigrated to Australia.

I have owned 2 Consul Capris here. The one that I have currently is still (being off the road since 1985) undergoing restoration. The car has been sand blasted and will sport a Toyota 4AGE and 5 speed.

I have the sole rights to reproduce windscreen rubbers for the Capri and Classic, as I paid for the molding.
Owned a Consul Capri since 1978. Ex-President of Consul Capri Owners Club (UK). Have owned 5 Capri's, 4 Classics, and numerous other 60's Fords.

Welcome John,

The Consul Capri must be a rare bird in Australia. As I understand it, Ford Aus never officially imported these, so all would have had to come in as personal imports.

Hi Mike, well not as rare as you might think.

I was told that every dealer had one, as a display car. Ford Classics were never imported and therfore only personal imports exist(ed). I have wrecked 3 Classics, All too far gone. Saved one 2 door Classic and 2 Capri's. One of my Capri's was a Perth car, one of the original 5. The one that I have now came from Rockhampton, in Queensland. It's right at the Tropic, and had virtually no rust. I sometimes think that I should have left it though!! SO MUCH WORK!! Oh well one day...

I used to run a register for Australia, there were about 10 cars, and others that were know about. We lost one GT to NZ, (he has a website about his new love.... (Samantha)!!!

We got another back though, a guy in WA imported one a few years ago. I haven't heard anything of it though.
