Cortina MK1 & MK2 automatic transmission bracket

Post by peteleo »

Would anyone know why p/n: 118E-6K040A bracket is necessary for a T35 transmission.
Bracket attaches from the bell housing to the engine underneath the generator bracket.
Can't imagine that it prevented transmission torque. Apparently changed to DORY-6K040A maybe for the Pinto 1600 ?

Hi Michael,

Its rather an engineering question and curious why Ford decided to install a brace on the automatic transmission and not on a manual. There is no mention of this in any book nor information in any EnFo manual that I have nor internet.
Not a deal, life will still go on.

So the only reply I got is from Graeme White of EnFord Spares New Zealand.
For those who maybe interested or has an EnFo with a T35 transmission:

Hi Pete

Thanks for your email.

I don't have the service bulletin for the Mk1 Cortina auto, but I do have the one for the Corsair 1500 auto, which should be the same. The exploded view of the drive plate shows the bracket. The text doesn't mention it in the Removal section. It is mentioned in the Replacement section, but not its purpose.

If the transmission is hanging on the engine, the tendency would be for the top bolts to want to pull backwards and the bottom of the transmission to push forwards, so I wonder if the bracket stops the bottom of the transmission from wanting to move forward and therefore reduces the tension load on the top bellhousing bolts??? Such hanging shouldn't occur when the rear of the transmission is supported on the rear crossmember, but I can't think of another reason.

Sorry unable to be more helpful on this occasion.

BTW, I am retiring in March next year. The business is being considered by a number of promising purchasers at present, so I am optimistic that it will continue.

Kind regards
