Please shed some light

Post by 66gt »

Hey all!

Please shed some truth on us, UK owners!

I was told recently that Mk1 Cortina GT' 2 door's are changing hands for upwardly into the 10k realm in the UK, can this be true? If true, I'm gobsmacked by that one!
I know values will differ for LHD vs. RHD cars.

Cheers all,

Steve

Steve,

I can't confirm that but will check when I get more time. It sounds rather high but then 10k used to sound a lot for a Mk1 Lotus! It may be that 2dr GTs are following the upward Lotus prices. That said the GT is quite rare in all forms so they may be creeping up. The Mk1 Escort is the car that has gone mad, in fact any 2Dr is wanted. I knew an old gentleman who had owned his 68 1300GT from new until last year when it got stolen off his drive.

Paul,

Thanks for the reply to my question. I'm just wondering what I should insure my car for when it comes time to put it back on the road. The only thing left to do to it is paint. Sorry, it's a 1966 Mk1 GT 2door. I'm also in a dilemma on which color to paint it. It currently is a Dragoon red car and I'm wanting to color change it to Monaco red car. Although, now that I think of it, the color might distract from the original, but would that lower value?
Any thoughts?

Steve,

It's your car.Unless you're thinking of
selling it,paint it whatever color you want.
Do it for yourself, not what's the popular
opinion.

Steve,

You're welcome. I have looked through quite a few magazines and strangely the GT Cortina is very rare as I haven't found any for sale at all! I don't know what you would insure it for, I guess it all depends on how the US insurers get their information. Normally the price guides in UK classic magazines are rubbish and hardly ever updated.
Is Monaco Red brighter? I recall with great fondness my late uncle's 64 Corsair GT which he bought nearly new. Great looking car and the colour really suited it. He traded it in 1967 for a new Mk2 Cortina 1500GT which was also red. As Doug says, paint the car how you want it, not how others think you should do it!

Steve,

After it's finished,I'd insure it for at least $10K.
Where are you going to find another one like it for
that price (including fixing it up)?

Thanks for the info Paul and the encouraging words Doug! I don't plan to sell it anytime soon especially after owning it for 18 yrs. it's too great of a car to sell it. I guess it's maybe that mystique of owning one, most everyone wants one but can't find one, sorta thing that keeps me owning it!
I thought the quarter window seals were much more expensive a few years ago when I priced them...say in the $300 a pair amount?

Cheers you guys,

Nice one up here went for $14,000 CDN.. Nicest 66 MK1 I have ever seen mind you it was a Fiat twink under the hood...

You could eat off this car, not like mine, which looks like I eat off it!

I hope the values are going up.. Resto costs are certainly not going down!

A good friend of mine has just sold a pretty ropey looking 2 door 1500GT mk1 Cortina for £2000 It could be tidied up and put on the road with a little effort but needs a lot of work and money to be a show car.
