2000e Single Rail Gear shift disassembly

Post by Kiwi Cortina »

Can any one tell me how to disassemble the gearstick to replace the nylon ball. I am having trouble at the rubber bushing which joins the top half of the stick with the bottom half.

Thanks.

Top half of the stick shift is encased in rubber. Team Blitz sells a rebuilt kit for the Cortina and Capri 1600 and can tell you the procedure on how to remove the top half. I've seen loose top halves before and would seem not too difficult to pull apart. Pete

I remember these from the day, and then at least you had to buy a complete assembly when the threads in the nylon cup inevitably stripped. I remember we had a beat up MkI Escort we'd just taken in, which didn't justify the cost. Superglue was brand new on the market, so we got the apprentice to thoroughly clean everything, smear the thread area with superglue, then push down on the assembly until it set. Unfortunately, he'd been a bit lavish applying the glue and had got it over over the knob as well, so couldn't let go of it. We ignored his pathetic cries for help - as you do - and my next vision through the rear screen was of him sliding across the front seats, climbing over the passenger seat backrest, sliding across the rear seat, then climbing over the driver's seat backrest. He kept doing this until he had eventually unscrewed the knob, and appeared with this, accompanied by much bad language, still in his hand.
