Mk2 cortina starter

Post by dlh98370 »

All,
Is the 1.6l Pinto pre engaged starter compatible with the Mk2 Cortina bell housing? Look like the Cortina bell housing supports both the pre engaged and inertia type and has three mounting bolt holes.

Like Pete says, the Pinto starter will not fit the Cortina bell housing but you should do a bit more homework here as to what ring gear you have too. The pre engaged and inertia ring gears are different and they all come in different tooth counts too. Just for one example the 135 tooth ring should have a 10 tooth pinion starter, the 132 ring wants an 11 tooth starter and there is more that I don't know about. It was interesting when I looked at my parts collection I see even the 2000e Mk2 bell housing comes in 2 bolt and 3 bolt starter mountings although a 2 will fit where a 3 was and visa-versa. I then looked at the starters and found a fair variance in these as well.

I was planning on using a 135 tooth flywheel on my Zetec Anglia. The flywheel could be either a Escort, Pinto which have to be drilled for larger bolts and I have a 1.6l Zetec flywheel I imported which will work straight out of the box. The Pinto flywheel appears to need the least modification but is the heaviest. I have yet to find out the cost of re-drilling a flywheel for a different pressure plate. The OEM flywheel is the large dual mass which won't fit in the bell housing. On my Zetec Fiesta I used an US 1.6L Escort flywheel (135T) with a Taurus 10T starter without any difficulties.

I was hoping the pinto starter would work. I need to find a pre engaged starter for the Cortina bell housing (three bolt) with 10 teeth. You have to be careful because the silly things appear to be Left and right handed.

This appears to be the correct starter shape wise but a little short on beanie wennies. Probably need on the order of 1.2KW starter
